Change image DPI

Change the DPI value stored in a JPG or PNG without saving the picture again. DPI does not change the pixels or the KB, but many forms still ask for it.

Loading the tool…

How it works

  1. Choose a JPG or PNG. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
  2. See the DPI it has now, then pick 72, 96, 150, 200, 300 or 600, or type your own.
  3. Download it. Only the DPI field in the file header changes, and the image data is checked byte by byte against the original.

What DPI means

DPI (dots per inch) tells a printer how many pixels to put in each inch. A photo that is 600 pixels wide prints 2 inches wide at 300 DPI and 6.25 inches wide at 96 DPI. On a screen it looks the same at any DPI. To work out the pixels for a size in cm, use the cm to pixels converter.

Questions

Does changing the DPI make my photo sharper or smaller in KB?

No. DPI is a label for printers. The pixels, the sharpness and the file size stay the same. To change the KB, use the exact-KB resizer.

Why does my form ask for 300 DPI, then?

Some exam, job and visa portals check the DPI field, often because their rules were written for printed photos. Setting it here passes that check without changing the picture.

Will Windows and Photoshop show the new DPI?

Yes. The tool writes the JFIF header that most programs read, and it also updates the EXIF and Photoshop resolution fields when a file has them.

What about WebP, GIF or HEIC files?

Their DPI cannot be set without saving the picture again, so the tool offers to convert the image to a JPG at the DPI you pick.
